  • Don’t Forget to Fall Back This Weekend!

Hey Compliance Warriors!

This weekend is when most of the country will “fall back” at least one more time. So, Saturday night / Sunday morning you will set your clocks back 1 hour allowing for an extra hour of sleep – YAY!

But, how does falling back affect the payroll of employees who are working through Saturday night into Sunday morning? The answer is simple. No matter what it looks like on the time clock, just be sure your employees are paid for every hour they work.

Example:  Pat clocks in at 7 pm and works a 12-hour shift clocking out at 7 am Sunday morning. That looks like 12 hours minus a meal period or two for most workers on a shift like this. But, did you account for the extra hour that was worked when the clock was set back around 2 am? In this case, Pat worked from 7 pm to 2 am  (7 hours) and then from 1 am – when the clock was set back – until 7 am (6 more hours) totaling 13 hours minus a meal period or two.

Be sure you watch for errors like this and pay your employees for every hour they work.
