I did not know that blanks=BAD! and that they need to be filled in with n/a. Fixing I-9’s for current employees isn’t a problem but what do I do with previous employees I-9’s? Do I fill in the blanks with n/a myself or leave them blank since I am not the employee? Thanks!

If you can get the employees to come in and edit the form that is the best idea. USCIS says we cannot edit/correct Section 1. So, if you do not have access to the employee you will need to make a memo stating you found the error during an internal audit and have been unable to make the correction because the employee is no longer with the company. An auditor can still fine you – if they choose – but they tend to lessen the fines if you have noted that you could not reach the worker and you did actually find the error in an internal audit.

You can read the I-9 completion instructions that call for the NA to be used in specific boxes.
