  • H.R. Questions: Can we have a work from home (WFH) dress code?

Hey Compliance Warriors and HR Bosses!

Many employers are wondering how to tackle the issue of dress codes at home. We’re all pretty tired of the “just rolled out of bed look” on our video chats and even WFH employees say they feel less productive if they are underdressed.

Here is the leading survey on WFH dress and productivity. https://couponfollow.com/research/work-wardrobe-covid-compared

Since you cannot really enforce a dress code at home, the best you can do is to create a list of suggestions for being more productive in the WFH environment. Look to this survey results in the link above for specifics.

You can require that on-camera meetings meet specific dress and grooming requirements which will mirror the dress code you probably already have for the workplace.

Here is a link to an article that contains language you can adapt to your policy.

Here is another great article about dress codes in general. https://www.wolterskluwer.com/en/expert-insights/policies-for-workplace-dress-codes

If you are a member. we also have samples in the Policy and Procedure Library.  https://helpdeskforhr.com/member-dashboard/forms-documents-library/

Finally, it’s also a good idea to include images of acceptable on-camera dress and grooming. You can have images that demonstrate the do’s and don’ts if you want.

I hope this helps!
