New York Begins Repeal of Healthcare Worker COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate

The New York State Department of Health (the “Department”) announced on May 30, 2023, that “it has begun the process of repealing the COVID-19 vaccine requirements for workers at regulated health care facilities.” The requirement once served as critical public health tool. The Department now states that “the changing landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving vaccine recommendations” guided its decision to repeal the vaccine mandate. This now heads to the Public Health and Planning Council for approval. Learn More

NYC Enacts Height and Weight Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

On May 26, 2023, New York City enacted an ordinance amending the New York City Human Rights Law to ban employment discrimination on the basis of a person’s height and weight. This new ordinance further expands the comprehensive list of characteristics already protected by the New York City Human Rights Law. The ordinance will become effective November 22, 2023. Learn More


Evanston, Illinois Establishes a Fair Workweek Ordinance

On May 23, 2023, Evanston, Illinois joined the group of jurisdictions that have enacted fair workweek legislation. The Evanston Fair Workweek Ordinance will apply to employers of more than 15 employees in the hospitality (hotels and lodgings), food service and restaurant, retail, warehouse services, building services, and manufacturing industries. Any employees who qualify for minimum wage and perform at least two hours of work in a workweek in Evanston will be subject to the ordinance. The ordinance is scheduled to go into effect on September 1, 2023, and contains a host of scheduling and recordkeeping requirements. Learn More
