Connecticut Legislation Changes Overtime Rules for Nurses and Abrogates Collective Bargaining Rights of Private-Sector Hospitals
Provisions included in a must-pass budget bill will make significant changes for Connecticut hospitals. These changes, which were embedded in the nearly 900-page Public Act 23-204 signed into law on June 12, 2023, revise current law regarding mandatory overtime for registered nurses, and relieve unions and RNs from complying with longstanding contracts about scheduling and overtime. WA Cares Fund Premiums Started July 1, 2023, and Quarterly Reporting Begins October 1, 2023
On July 1, 2023, after a long delay, mandatory withholdings for the WA Cares Fund finally took effect. The WA Cares Fund is a state-run, long-term-care insurance program requiring employers to pay premiums through a mandatory payroll deduction from all employees who have not provided proof of an exemption. Changes in California’s Regulations Regarding Criminal Records Approved
The California Civil Rights Council previously issued draft revisions to the Fair Employment and Housing Act’s regulations governing inquiries into and consideration of a job applicant’s criminal history in making hiring decisions. California Bill Seeks to Ban Caste-Based Discrimination State-Wide
On July 5, 2023, the California Senate voted 34-1 in favor of clarifying existing law by defining “ancestry” to include “caste” as protected within the state’s anti-discrimination statutes. If enacted, Senate Bill 403 would be the first state-wide prohibition on caste discrimination, defined as an individual’s perceived position in a system of social stratification on the basis of inherited status.
