  • My employee is always late to work and it is hurting morale. Help!

Question:

One of my team members has an issue with punctuality—they’re strolling in later and later every day. It’s starting to affect team morale because others feel they’re picking up the slack. How do I address habitual lateness?

Answer:

Lateness can be contagious—kind of like a yawn. Once one person starts, everyone else is tempted to join. Here’s the plan:

  1. Document, Document, Document: Note every instance of lateness so you have clear examples.
  2. Have a Private Chat: Schedule a one-on-one meeting to express concern. Ask if there’s a reason behind the tardiness (e.g., child care, transportation issues). Sometimes, a flexible schedule might be an easy solution.
  3. Set Clear Expectations: If you require a strict schedule, clarify it and outline the consequences of continued tardiness.
  4. Follow Through: If they promise to be on time and keep slipping, it’s time for progressive discipline.

Remember to empathize but also hold everyone to the same standard. We can’t have everyone waltzing in at noon just because they didn’t feel like breakfast at dawn!

I hope this helps.
