On January 23, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence.” This order is intended to strengthen the United States’ position as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by eliminating policies that may hinder innovation.
Key Points of the Executive Order:
Purpose: The order emphasizes the importance of developing AI systems without ideological bias or social agendas, aiming to promote human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.
Policy: It is the policy of the United States to sustain and enhance its global AI dominance to ensure a brighter future for all Americans.
Action Plan Development: Within 180 days, a comprehensive action plan will be developed by key advisors and agency heads to achieve the policy’s objectives.
Revocation of Previous Policies: The order revokes Executive Order 14110, signed by former President Joe Biden on October 30, 2023, which focused on the safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of AI. The new order mandates a review of all policies and directives related to the revoked order to identify and eliminate any obstacles to AI innovation.
Implementation: Agencies are instructed to suspend, revise, or rescind actions that are inconsistent with the new policy, ensuring alignment with the goal of maintaining U.S. leadership in AI.
This executive order seeks to remove barriers to AI innovation, positioning the United States to act decisively in retaining global leadership in artificial intelligence.
